Go Outside and play!" Part III
The recent Kaiser Family Foundation report on kids and the media found that kids age 8-18 are watching some form of media--TV, computers, ipods, etc. for six hours and 20 min. per day. Given that kids are in school about seven hours per day, that means that older kids are not getting outdoors much at all. They are not getting fresh air and sunshine. They are not interacting with nature. Except for Instant Messaging and email, they are not building relationships.
Get them outside to play to release their excess energy and to be with their friends. Like their younger siblings, if they are forced outside and away from the TV, they eventually will find something to do. Give them some challenges. Get them a simple yet challenging game like the Balance Board from Amazon. Or exciting, leg-strengthening anti-gravity boots
.
Certainly older kids enjoy playing sports. Send them outdoors to play basketball, soccer
, baseball
, or tennis.
Sports are a great way to get kids interacting. Keep the emphasis on fun and friendship. Kids will become more confident as they successfully develop their skills, will stay in better shape, and will be happier.
